City of Columbia to Host Bloomberg Youth Climate Action Showcases

The City of Columbia Bloomberg Youth Climate Action Fund grant recipients will host two Climate Action Showcases displaying information on their Climate Action Projects. Each booth will showcase project information and feature volunteers to speak about the project and its outcome. The showcase is drop-in style.

The January 20, 2026 showcase will feature approximately half of the 17 grant recipients and will take place on Tuesday, January 20, 2026 from 3:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the City Hall lobby. The remaining recipients will be featured at a second showcase on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, from 3:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., also in the City Hall lobby.

“The Bloomberg Youth Climate Action Fund is proof that when we invest in our young people, we invest in real, lasting solutions for our communities. Thanks to the generous support of Bloomberg Philanthropies, Columbia’s youth are not only learning about climate challenges; they are leading innovative, hands-on projects addressing the issues we face today while shaping a more sustainable future,” said Mayor Daniel Rickenmann. “This showcase highlights the creativity, passion, and leadership of the next generation, and we are proud to give them the platform and resources to turn ideas into action.”

Bloomberg Philanthropies awarded the City of Columbia $100,000 in 2025 to distribute to youth aged 14-25 to conduct a climate action project. Projects ranged from upcycling athletic uniforms to blankets to a river cleanup and anti-litter education campaign. Attendees will represent the University of South Carolina, the Darla Moore School of Business, Columbia College, the SC Wildlife Federation, Dreher High School and the NAACP Youth Council.

The public and media are invited to attend.

With 84% of youth around the world reporting concern that climate change threatens people and the planet, Mayor Daniel J. Rickenmann announced in June 2024 that the City of Columbia is joining Bloomberg Philanthropies’ new Youth Climate Action Fund. This initiative provides technical assistance and funding for 100 mayors to activate tens of thousands of young people ages 15 – 24 to design, produce, and govern urgent climate solutions in cities across the globe.

As part of this program, the City of Columbia will receive $100,000 to distribute as microgrants to fund a groundswell of youth-led climate initiatives. From mobilizing tree-planting or public education campaigns to launching recycling or waste reduction initiatives to participating in mitigation planning or preparedness programs, efforts stemming from the new Youth Climate Action Fund will advance critical community goals such as meeting decarbonization commitments or reducing consumption-based emissions.

The City of Columbia congratulates all 17 Bloomberg Youth Climate Action Fund Recipients for their impactful efforts and remains committed to supporting initiatives that uplift the health and well-being of all residents.
